What is sinus lifting?
Sinus lifting is the reconstruction of the bone tissue. The procedure is performed with the use of bone-filling materials which get placed in the maxillary sinuses. Sinus lifting is not a very pleasant intervention but, fortunately, it takes little time. Contemporary means of local anesthesia used in DentaTur medical centers in Antalya, Istanbul, Marmaris, and Fethiye, help patients undergo all the manipulations with minimal discomfort.
Indications for sinus lifting
Sinus lifting becomes indispensable in case there is no opportunity to perform the implantation of the upper jaw due to bone tissue atrophy (when the bone becomes lower and narrower). Below are the reasons of bone tissue destruction:
- loss of a single tooth or several teeth (the irreversible process of bone atrophy starts as soon as in three months);
- oral cavity diseases (in case of ignoring dental diseases for a prolonged period of time, the infection penetrates deep to the roots of the teeth);
- age-specific changes in the tooth row;
- particular features of the anatomy of the patient;
- congenital anomalies.
In the majority of cases it is the patient himself/herself who is responsible for the above-mentioned problems. It should be borne in mind that the loss of a single tooth leads to significant changes in the bone tissue, even if the patient is a rather healthy person.
Types of sinus lifting
Sinus lifting can be either closed or open.
Closed sinus lifting is a milder procedure. The bottom of the maxillary sinus gets deepened through a small hole in the mucous membrane; then the treated area gets filled with bone-filling material. This is the spot for the installation of the future implant. Closed sinus lifting can be performed if the bone height is 7-8 mm.
In the presence of the sufficient bone height and if there are no contraindications, the implantation is conducted simultaneously with the bone tissue reconstruction.
Open sinus lifting involves making a small cut in the mucous membrane at the lateral area of the maxillary sinus. This enables the dental surgeon to obtain access to the bone in order to expand the bottom of the maxillary sinus. After the filling of the corresponding cavity with bone-filling material, the dentist makes a stitch. If the bone is sufficiently high (3 mm and more) the implant gets installed straightaway. This helps avoid repetitive surgical interventions. In other cases the implantation is performed 4 months after the sinus lift.
In order for sinus lifting to be successful, it is crucial to follow the necessary recommendations during the postoperative period. First of all, the patient should get rid of the old toothbrush, abstain from eating hot food on the first day after the intervention, avoid hypothermia, and take all the medications prescribed by the doctor. It is also recommended to stop doing sports for a certain period of time.
Apart from these general recommendations, your doctor will provide you with detailed instructions on the necessary dietary and hygiene regime for the whole rehabilitation period.
Stages of performing sinus lifting
Preparatory stage. Before proceeding to the sinus lift, the doctor conducts thorough diagnostics and assessment of the patient’s state of health. The comprehensive examination includes preliminary consultation, spiral computed tomography, and the manufacturing of a dental model. These measures help reduce as much as possible the risk of complications at further stages of the sinus lifting.
Anesthesia. Osteoplastic surgery is performed in the presence of local anesthesia. Most commonly it is regional anesthesia which gets injected in the tissue plane behind the last upper tooth. Moving across the adipose tissue, the substance reaches nerve fibers and blocks them, ensuring total lack of pain for 1-2 hours.
Surgical intervention. First the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus gets separated from the upper jawbone with the use of special tools. The corresponding cavity gets filled with ground bone made of the bone of the patient or a donor (sometime hypoallergenic bone expletive substance is used).
Final stage. In case an open sinus lift was performed, the cut gets stitched and treated with antiseptics. The closed technology provides an opportunity for installing a dental implant straight away.

Contraindications
Just like any surgical intervention, sinus lifting has a number of contraindications. The most common ones include blood-clotting disorders, while relative contraindications are oral cavity diseases. In the presence of oral cavity issues it is necessary first to eliminate such issues and then proceed to sinus lifting.
Besides, there are absolute contraindications which make sinus lifting totally impossible. They include cases in which anesthesia cannot be used for some reason. As a rule, such cases are represented by psychological disorders, and severe heart problems.
In other situations the patient should follow the instructions provided by his or her doctor.
Recommendations
- It is not recommended to take food for the first two hours after the operation. It is strictly forbidden to eat solid, spicy or hot foods as well as hot drinks.
- After the sinus lift the patient is discouraged from inflating his or her cheeks, blowing his or her nose intensively, and sneezing with a closed mouth. Besides, it is crucial to avoid hyperthermia or hypothermia.
- In case of a pounding pain in the stitched area, bleeding, increased temperature or runny nose, it is necessary to visit the clinic immediately so that the doctor could prescribe symptomatic treatment.
