Dental implants are one of the most popular dental treatments in Turkey. With their help, patients can permanently restore lost or severely damaged teeth,

Dental implant installation is a complex surgery, so it is necessary to be sure that the clinic where you are getting the treatment meets the safety standards. If the clinic you have chosen meets them, it is possible to get high-quality implants at a low price.

The Cost of Dental Implants in Turkey

Dental implants in Turkey usually cost less than in the UK or Europe, as Turkish dentistry and other medical fields benefit from extensive governmental aid. Turkish clinics attract many medical tourists willing to cross great distances to get dental procedures in Turkey.

Besides financial aid from the government, the cost of healthcare in Turkey also reflects slightly lower living costs in the country. Living in Turkey is half as expensive as living in the UK, which makes the prices of most Turkish services lower than in the UK.

BEFORE & AFTER

Before and after dental implants

The price for a dental implant in Turkey can vary, as the price for installing an implant is determined by the material, brand, dentist’s experience and the contents of a dental package deal. Dental treatments for most foreign customers are offered in a package with accommodation and transportation, though some clinics offer additional services, which increase the total treatment price. The services of more experienced dentists also cost more.

Who is Suitable to Get Dental Implants in Turkey?

To get a dental implant, the patient must meet certain conditions. First of all, the patient’s bones must be sufficiently dense to support an implant. A dental implant is a prosthesis shaped like a screw installed into the jawbone, and if the bone density is low, the implant can fracture the bone, leading to severe complications. The patient will pass a CT (computerised tomography) inspection to determine bone density. It will also give the dentists a three-dimensional scan of the patient’s jaws to help them place implants correctly. If the patient’s bone density is insufficient for an implant, the patient must get bone graft surgery before replacing teeth.

If the patient has gum disease, they must treat it before getting an implant, as the gums won’t heal properly otherwise.

The following conditions may also make the patient unsuitable for getting a dental implant

  • diabetes
  • AIDS
  • cancer
  • Gorham-Stout disease
  • health conditions associated with smoking

Some patients’ sinus cavities are very close to their upper jaw. When implants are installed in the upper jaw, the implant can perforate the sinus cavity if it is close to the jaw. Patients with sinus cavity that is too close must get a sinus lift treatment before installing replacing teeth in the upper jaw. These additional treatments are paid for separately.

If the patient is young, their bones can still grow, which means they are ineligible for dental implants, as when the patient’s jaw grows, the implant will become improperly placed or can displace other teeth. Some elderly patients may also have unstable health, making implant installation an unnecessary risk to their well-being.

Is It Safe to Have Dental Implants in Turkey?

In general, following several simple rules will allow a patient to determine whether it is safe to get implants at a Turkish clinic.

To begin, the patient should check the reviews left by other patients on various websites that collect such feedback.

Next, the patient should verify if the clinic has a Global Clinic Rating (GCR) score, which is rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating better quality. The absence of a GCR rating does not necessarily indicate that a clinic’s treatments are of low quality. This is because only clinics with an International Accredited Clinic (IAC) certificate can receive a GCR rating, and IAC certification is optional. A more effective approach is to confirm whether the clinic has a Turkish Ministry of Health certificate, as every reputable clinic in Turkey is required to have it. Such certification indicates that the clinic has successfully passed regular inspections conducted by the Ministry of Health. The patient can also check if the dentist has a licence from the Turkish Dental Association (TDA or, in Turkish, TDB). Every practising dentist in Turkey must be a  member of this association. The patient can also check the dentist’s accreditation if the clinic offers this information on its site.

The better dental clinics in Turkey use the same brands of implants as clinics in the UK. These implants also come with certificates to prove their authenticity. If a clinic cannot provide such documents, it uses low-quality or counterfeit implants. The patient should also check the certificates of the prostheses that will be attached to the implants. A dental implant replaces only the tooth’s root, while the visible part of the teeth is replaced by bridges, dental crowns or full veneers. Their quality is important, as they are subjected to most of the mechanical stress from eating.

The importance of the dentist’s experience when performing implant installation treatment becomes apparent when you know the surgery’s process. To install a dental implant, the dentist needs to cut the gums open and expose the jawbone. The dentist will install the screw of the implant directly into the bone. After installing the implant, the dentist closes the gums with stitches. Before continuing the procedure, the gums need to heal, and the implants fuse with the jaw in a process called osseointegration. It is a lengthy process that can take more than half a year. The dentist’s experience with installing implants is an important factor in osseointegration, as an inexperienced dentist can improperly install the implants, making them fail to fuse with the bone and requiring reinstallation.

Benefits and Risks of Getting Dental Treatments in Turkey

get teeth done in turkey

Dental treatments in Turkey are less expensive than in the UK and EU. But in most Turkish clinics, dental procedures are very high-quality. Dentists in Turkey are very experienced, as they need to study for at least five years to obtain a licence.

Most dental procedures in Turkey are offered as service packages,  making it easy for medical

tourists to get treatment in Turkey, as their in-country transportation and accommodation will be arranged for them.

As Turkish dental centres are well-financed, they use the best dental equipment and materials for their procedures, which increases the success rates of the surgeries and makes it less likely for patients to get side effects.

There are also some disadvantages to getting treatments in Turkey.

It is impossible to get follow-up examinations in person. Although Turkish clinics provide online consultations after surgery, the patient may still require an in-person examination of their implants, which can only be performed at a local clinic.

Which Dental Implant Brands are Used in Turkish Dental Clinics?

Turkish clinics use a variety of high-quality imported dental implants made by leading brands of medical supplies.

Straumann is a reputed Swiss brand of titanium implants that is popular worldwide. Their implants use patented technologies that make their implants able to osseointegrate quicker. Their implants are also known for their stability and reliability.

Hiossen is a South Korean brand of medical supplies. They manufacture dental implants in a diverse range of sizes and shapes to more adequately address the unique needs of every patient.  Hiossen implants are usually less expensive than other brands, but they do not sacrifice quality.

Nobel Biocare manufactures implants made of different materials. Their range includes metal and ceramic implants, as well as hybrid materials that combine the properties of metal and ceramic. Nobel Biocare was the first brand to launch the All-on-4 systems that consist of a fixed dental bridge attached to four implants. They also manufacture zygomatic implants that allow patients with decreased bone density to get teeth replacements in the upper jaw without bone grafting.

It is worth noting that dentists will attach temporary crowns or bridges to the implants after their installation. The permanent prostheses will be installed after osseointegration is complete and the incisions from the surgery heal.
